The Importance of Making Marks

Babies need to ‘play and explore’ with a variety of tools to learn that they can make marks.  As they grow older, they begin to understand that their marks can have meaning for example ‘that’s mummy’,  ‘that’s baby’.  When children become a little older, they begin to talk freely about the picture they are drawing and who is who.  They also understand that marks make letters, and these letters make up their name.  They begin to link the sounds to the letters and talk about the alphabet and different sounds.  We provide many opportunities to develop these skills in all ages of children from babies to preschool.
